Surviving a pandemic

By jem

There we all were just taking our freedom & health for granted... Boom a pandemic hits the world and sends it in a spin. Fourteen months later; we're amongst a whole new 'NORMAL'. I think I can speak for many of us when I say we feel like we are riding a wild rollercoaster right now, some in worse situations than others, but each valid.

I thought I'd share a few key takeaways with regards to mindset, nutrition and movement in this rapidly changing world...

  1. Mindset.

This is the HARDEST part of life at all times and we've all just been faced with varying degrees of challenge and change; all of which are absolutely VALID! What is not okay is to avoid your feelings OR use them as an excuse for not taking action, there is a difference betwee RESTING (a beautiful practice) and giving up on yourself. In fact, what a time to utilise spare time to get your mindset in check.. in ALL areas of life.

2. Nutrition - Diet - Weight management

Whatever you want to call it, body image and nourishing our bodies seems to go 1 of 2 ways in a restricted time. EAT ALL THE THINGS, and future you can suffer the consequences of sickness & diminished core values and body image. Sounds harsh but thats exactly whats going on here. OR you overtrain, under eat, think this is the time to achieve your best goals, take on all the challenges, and avoid your true self.. maybe you get great results... but how maintainable is it? Once some level of normality resumes are you able to continue the intensity OR do you take 10 steps back physically only to fall into a trap mentally. Absolute self sabotage!

3. Movement - LISTEN TO YOUR BODY

This very much follows on from point 2 but is so important. Your neighbour's burpee challenge may look fun, your significant other (should you have one) may be enjoying long walks of 10,000 steps a pop, the new app you downloaded may prompt you daily to do that early morning HIIT before your to do list kicks into action... but is that truly serving you? Is that what your body craves? Does that enhance your goals mentally and physically? Don't get me wrong, I'd rather people move than not at all, but I also think it is important to understand the value of outsourcing our energy appropriately whilst filling our cup. And the hard part...? this is so very individual for us all. Only someone that can look at your goals and needs holistically can really advise on the right course.. so don't blag it, seek some professional advise!

And if you are home, get creative, be inventive, laugh at yourself and your efforts because I can promise you.. we are ALL in the same boat, just of different shapes and sizes <3
